While Dirty Avocados Adventure Racing looks forward to 2010, we reflect on 2009. What a year it has been! We raced in New Hampshire's mountains at Untamed New England, in California's Sierras at Gold Rush Motherlode, and the world's biggest sand desert at the Abu Dhabi Adventure Challenge. Wow!
2010 is already starting to take shape. An early highlight will be another epic adventure on the other side of world: Australia's XPD Expedition Adventure Race. We'll also be racing all of the local AR contests--especially those in the new Checkpoint Tracker Series. And long-term, we're looking forward to September's Desert Winds Expedition.
What is adventure racing? Adventure racing is a combination of two or more
disciplines, including orienteering and navigation, cross-country
running, mountain biking, paddling and climbing and related rope
skills. An expedition event can span ten days or more while sprints
can be completed in a matter of hours. Typically there is no “dark
period” during races, regardless of their length – the
choice when (and if) to rest is left to the competitors.
Adventure racing is classically a co-ed team sport. Nonetheless, many races now
permit "teams" of 1 to 5 persons, single-sex or co-ed, and sometimes
include age-based categories.
